Winter Solstice: More

Some say that ever ‘gainst that season comes WinSolRm
Wherein our Saviour’s birth is celebrated,
The bird of dawning singeth all night long;
And then, they say, no spirit dare stir abroad,
The nights are wholesome, then no planets strike,
No fairy takes, nor witch hath power to charm,
So hallow’d and so gracious is the time.,
                        — Hamlet, Act I scene 1

Winter Solstice is the celebration of the nadir. Energetically, Winter is the season of contraction. Yet it is also the time of exploring inner space, discovering inner light. Both Tantra in the East and Celtic tradition in the West delight in celebrating the magic of this inner space. The Midwinter or Yuletide celebration of the birth of the magical child of light on the darkest night of the year is a seasonal myth honoured in many indigenous cultures, and still preserved in Christian myth, where it is associated with the birth of Jesus.  Gifts, twinkling lights, song and storytelling, all the things that appeal to the child in us, belong to the Solstice. Outside, there is cold and dark. Inside, we gather together in the winter cave, warming ourselves at our inner fires, exploring the magic of the dark. Here there is community and connectedness, the energy of the heart, aliveness at the root, and the light that burns within all of us.
